This week in social studies, we had some fun connecting Earth Day and Poetry Month by having students create concrete poems inspired by the beauty of landforms. It was a quick, engaging lesson that combined geography with crafting specific AI prompts to generate creative designs. The assignment was inspired by Awesome Earth: Concrete Poems Celebrate Caves, Canyons, and Other Fascinating Landforms by Joan Bransfield Graham.

We began by brainstorming a list of landforms and researching their definitions to ensure the generated poems accurately reflected each feature. Next, we discussed what elements to include in a strong prompt to achieve the desired results. Students then used ChatGPT, incorporating the definitions, to create concrete poems that both described and visually represented their chosen landforms. These are just a few examples of the work produced by the fifth graders.

Overall, the lesson blended creativity, geography, and technology in a way that made learning both meaningful and engaging. Students not only deepened their understanding of landforms, but also practiced writing with purpose and using AI thoughtfully to bring their ideas to life.
